Can solar cells achieve efficiency above 50%?

Solar cells need to be more efficient than they are today in order for solar power to become primary source of global energy.

Another step in the right direction comes from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) where researchers have created solar cell with the efficiency of 47.1%.

This is current world recod in solar cell efficiency and it is really only a matter of time before solar cells reach efficiency above 50%.

However, creating these cells in laboratory is only the first step. The most difficult task is making production of these cells commercially viable.

As already stated above this newly fabricated six-junction solar cell holds the world record for the highest solar conversion efficiency at 47.1%, which was measured under concentrated illumination.

According to NREL researchers this six-junction solar cell is well-suited for use in concentrator photovoltaics.

The NREL researchers are optimistic that solar cells can achieve efficiency above 50% but they also say that 100% efficiency cannot be reached due to the fundamental limits imposed by thermodynamics.
